Language Immersion - The Where

This updated list shows the various language immersion programs in the greater Portland area current as of September 2017. It originally followed Language Immersion – The What, Why and When, which offers a basic overview of language immersion.  The list below includes schools that support true immersion to varying degrees, as well as after-school or weekend programs.  Note that we didn’t list separate preschool immersion programs (although there are plenty out there).

If you’ve heard of any programs not on our list, please leave a comment with information.  All schools or programs listed below are in Portland, unless otherwise noted:

 also,

 French

German

Thanks for letting us know, Crista. When the district transfer rules shake out these might be a great option for folks in SE Portland too.

Northwest Academy, grades 6-12, in downtown Portland offers fluent level classes for students coming from immersion programs in Spanish and French. Next year, we will offer a Mandarin class at this level as well. In addition, students who have not yet begun language classes can begin language study in French, Spanish, and Mandarin.

@ Linda - Thanks for letting us know. I don't know how that happened - too many late night hours, or not enough caffeine - or both!

@ Lainie - Thanks for this info. We definitely want to learn more about NWAcademy!

@ Stephanie - Thanks for this tip. Do you know how packed their enrollment is & if they allow folks from outside of Beaverton to apply/lottery?

Grant has a Japanese immersion program. Why doesn't this start at other primary schools that feed into Grant like Beverly Clearly?

Oregon Trail Academy in Boring, OR offers Mandarin class from K-8, I believe. Although not immersion, Mandarin class appears to be part of the regular curriculum.
