- Practical tips if you are anxiously awaiting answers and still don’t know which school your child will attend
After the lottery is over, the applications out, you wait. If you are reasonably happy with your neighborhood school, then this wait might be nothing more than mildly unsettling. But what if you really have your heart set on a particular school? Maybe you even got waitlisted at a school or two, which makes the wait all the more torturous – and long – since it could be as late as October till you know where you’ll end up.
The Interminable Wait: Practical Tips
- Maintain your calm. We know it kinda sucks not being able to get your kid in an excited frame of mind for a new school. But the last thing you want to do is have your child pick up on your anxiety, lest s/he will learn to associate “school” with anxiety.
- Stay connected. If you go out of town for more than a couple days, be sure the PPS Transfer office, or any other schools you’re waiting on, will have a way to reach you. In fact, let a trusted friend or neighbor check your mail and call you if anything school related arrives.
- Bond with others in the same situation. If you fall into the “worrier” or “overthinker” category, you might need to process your anxiety during the waiting game. Nothing beats commiserating with friends over a glass of wine, or a coffee. It won’t remove the pit in your stomach, but it will make it more tolerable!
You won’t be in limbo forever. Eventually you will have answer, maybe even tomorrow. Or possibly late August, if not later… And then you’ll either be happy with how it all shook out – in which case, collect your $200 and Pass Go. If, however, things did not turn out as you had hoped, then read on to Unlucky Results.
